Caffeine and Energy Drinks May Pose Risk for Kids
Concerns and side-effects of caffeinated beverages

The popularity of energy drinks is on the rise among teens raising serious concerns about their effects on young people. Because the amount of caffeine in these drinks is often unknown, and unregulated, reports of overdoses are increasing. Symptoms of a caffeine overdose include dehydration, vomiting, tremors, insomnia and more. For more information about the potential risks of energy drinks, click here.

Local Teenager has Bright Hopes for the Future

He learns risks of his substance abuse from a YES support group at school

Scott is a teenage boy who was experiencing difficulties at home as a resboy's faceult of his verbally abusive and alcoholic father. In response, he began running away and turning to drugs and alcohol to cope with his stresses and as a result, his grades began to slip.

Even after separating from his father, his mother was at a loss on how to help Scott. She called Scott's junior high school to inform them of the situation. Scott was then referred to a YES school-based substance abuse counselor who invited him to join a support group for kids who were impacted by the drug or alcohol abuse of a family member.

After a few meetings, Scott felt less isolated and learned about his own predisposition to addiction. This helped him make the choice to steer clear of drugs. A year later he is sober, getting great grades and excited about his future. YES' partnerships with local schools are critical in supporting our youth. In addition, YES also offers a free camp for kids affected by the substance abuse of a family member, thanks to our partnership with the Moyer Foundation. For more information, click here.

Local Attorney Finds Being a Table Captain "Easy"
Be a table captain for YES' only fundraiser

With a schedule that doesn't allow for ongoing volunteer work, Kristine Wilson, an attorney at Perkins Coie LLP, finds the YES Invest in Youth Breakfast a great way to be involved.  "I don't have time to be an active volunteer throughout the year, but it's really easy to coordinate with friends and colleagues for one annual breakfast event!"  She views the opportunity to host a table as a powerful way to share the work of YES with others. YES offers support and materials for those who would like to be a Table Captain, making the process easy for even the busiest schedules.  Click here for more information.
